Over the festive season my blog, shop and twitter fell silent as I escaped to snowier climes for a little pre-christmas break. Here are a few pics from Munich and Kochelle (the home of the fabulous Franz Marc Art Museum).

The Gluwein flowed and the snow fell as we made the most of pretzels, currywurst (not me!), art and christmas markets.

So the story begins back in the summer. Whilst dog sitting in lovely Suffolk I received an email from Belinda and Heidi Aka folk duo O'Hooley & Tidow asking whether I might be interested in illustrating their second album "The Fragile", a follow up to their critically acclaimed debut "Silent June".

"Hoorah!" and "Of Course!" I replied and now many months later the first stunning single "The Last Polar Bear" has been released.

Yesterdays Southsea Boutique Market

Yesterday I got up a little too early to fight the fog and set up my stall at The Southsea Boutique Market held monthly in the Portsmouth Guildhall. Over 120 stall holders and what felt like 4 million people crowded into the guildhall to share a love of all things handmade and vintage.

Stalls included art, jewellery, vintage clothing, collectables, cakes, toys and everything else in between.

Above are a few shots of my illustrated goodies....

Maison Foo Present MEMOIRS OF A BISCUIT TIN @ The Nuffield Theatre

Last night I went to see Maison Foo perform their current show "Memoirs of Biscuit Tin" at The Nuffield. I was absolutely blown away by their gorgeous artful shabbiness, incredible physical characterization and the sheer inventiveness used to bring to life a really touching, human story.

Taking place in an abandoned house, the characters; wall, floor and chimney are searching for the old lady who used to inhabit the house. Through clowning and improvised puppetry, her memories and small stories are re-enacted by her crumbling house, building a picture of a real who is more than the dementia sufferer she ultimately became.

Learning to patchwork quilt, results so far.......

One of the lovely ladies involved in the Broadlaw Community Mosaic Project (more about that later) has been teaching me to patchwork quilt and here are the results so far...... I'm not sure how big I'll be able to make it as the pile of on-going projects is inching ever skyward but so far so good.

When I wasn't dicing with hornet based danger yesterday I was hanging out at Badger Press Print Studio in Bishops Waltham for their annual open day. Screen print tutor and ace photographer Rob Luckins put on a chilled out day of printing and socialising while his sister Emma Luckins made the best cupcakes with moustaches I have tasted in a long while. I have been moving house this week and consequently have quite a bit of blogging to catch up on so bear with me as it has been a busy and creative weekend......
I am now living in Knowle Village and am very much enjoying it. Apart from next door but one guitar hero-ing for hours and dawn till dusk clay pigeon shooting it is very peaceful. It's also quite exciting to live in the grounds of a Victorian Asylum after researching the area with my Brune Park School Young Roots group. Last night I made a foray into the world of willow weaving thanks to a workshop run by Judith Needham at The Ashcroft Arts Centre. Described by Judith as "trying to wrestle an octopus", willow weaving does involve trying to wrangle damp willow lengths into shapes it has no desire to be in! We experimented with different ways to make hearts (the results of which are below) and I found it weirdly addictive. I'm already thinking about wrapping bits in wool and weaving feathers into the shapes. It is also tempting to sneak out in the dead of night leaving "Blair Witch"- esq effigies dangling from the trees and porches of my neighbors. Too "Wicker Man"? Perhaps......

So Artsmart has been and gone and hopefully everyone has a great time. The standard of work on show was fantastic. Luckily I was stuck behind my stall otherwise I'd have a house full o' stuff and zero money.

A huge thank you to everyone who came down. Meeting so many lovely people made the weekend worthwhile and the generous comments about my work were much appreciated. In the following days I'll be posting some of my favourite stalls from the show so you can check out the talent.

NETLEY POLICE FAMILY DAY

So it has been all change lately but I took some time out from moving house and preparing for Artsmart (more about that shortly!) to tout my wares at the Netley Police Family Day. It was a great event packed with police related activities, carnival games, hogs roasts, the outstanding Hampshire Constabulary Band and of course Arts and Crafts.

I did have a mishap, smashing one of my framed pieces to bits accidently but the day went well and a good time was had by all!

Relay 2011 with Quay Arts and A Space is over!

The Relay project was recently completed and was a fantastic project to be involved in. Here is a snippet from the blog post which accompanied my piece on the plinth....

From the artist's blog post:
"Picking up on themes of war and conflict, I took the notion of memorial from the previous piece and aimed to create an altar like monument, reminiscent of war memorials, that remained very personal and ultimately vulnerable. One hundred plaster cast dominoes have been individually placed and each one has the potential to topple the others..."

Rules and Regs presents Relay 2011

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to be selected ti take part in an exciting new project run by the arts organisation "Rules and Regs". Relay is a curatorial structure designed to challenge visual artists to experiment with new ways of working. It works like this............

The twelve participating artists draw lots to determine a random order in which they will join the Relay.
The Relay programme curator selects an initial Object to serve as the starting point for the Relay ‘chain reaction'.
The Object is not revealed to the participating artists until the beginning of the programme, at which time it is given to the first artist to take away from the gallery.
The artist then has a short time - about 48 hours - in which to alter the Object and return it to the gallery where it is documented and exhibited for the rest of the week.
The next artist in the chain is then given the object to take away, alter and return for exhibition...
The Relay continues with each artist altering the Object in turn.

I am the 6th artist in line for the Aspace Arts plinth and so have an anxious week ahead while I wait to collect the object before responding to it myself and returning it to the plinth next tues.

The 3 Peaks Challenge

Ok so I'm back again after another lengthy break (making new work all the while!). My scatter gun approach to blogging is just something that must be accepted. I'll never be a daily blogger alas. So the 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of The Meningitis Trust went well despite being one of the wettest in living memory. It was a weekend of torrential rain and gale force winds but a lot of soggy fun was had. The pics attached are of Ben Nevis only as this was THE ONLY view we had the whole time! Thanks to everyones generous support £32,000 was raised in total!

For those of you following my progress with the 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of The Meningitis Trust, here are some pics of my recent climb up Snowdon with my best bud Abi Pepperman who is also taking part in the challenge. We left at 3am and arrived at the summit in time to see the sunrise and these spectacular views.

Southampton to John o' Groats in just 14 short hours! Fantastic week spent hiking around Caithness and Orkney learning about the wealth of wildlife and history the area has to offer. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn't mind weather and the risk of being blown off cliff tops. The trip is already sparking new ideas.....

I was informed yesterday that I am a finalist in the Aesthetica Magazine Creative Works Competition! 40 Images were selected from 1200 entries and all finalists will appear in the Aesthetica Annual (available from Borders Bookshop...shameless plug!). I'm super excited to be selected, winners will be announced soon I think......

NEW Flock of Deer Dibbens......

There are a new flock of Deer Dibbens in the world (10 in total) which will be available to adopt at the Aspace Collectible Show opening this Friday at the Bargate Monument Gallery (see above post for details) Deer Dibbens are handmade from recycled vintage fabrics with beech twig antlers "pruned" from my parents hedge. Sssh!

After seeing a blobfish voted as weird animal of the week on the net I felt compelled to chronicle his search for love and the mishaps he encounters. Just a fun excuse to draw weird and wonky sea creatures really!

Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2009

Thursday 8th Oct was the private view of the third annual Cheltenham Illustration Awards.

Simone Lia and Tom Gauld were guest speakers and also exhibited a range of their latest work alongside that of the student and emerging talent entries. It was a fantastic day out that began with talk from Simone and Tom who were both incredibly engaging and entertaining. As each slide came up there was a hush and a little ripple of laughter as the audience all got to the punch line of each illustration at the same time. The quality of the work was fantastic and the bright modern exhibition space in Gloucester uni all added to the high quality of the show. After crisps and sarnies the awards were presented and mingling commenced!

My piece, "Cast Adrift", was the one chosen for the exhibition.....check out the pics!

Here is a little taster of a piece I'm working on. Both images are works in progress illustrating the Sami folk tale "The Christmas Wanderers". Some of the characters have been developed from the Qujavarrsuk project.

I found out last week that my work has been highly commended at the Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2009. Alas no awards but it does mean I'll have work included on the show. I am not sure which piece/pieces it will be (more news when I know myself!) This year the awards are presented by Simone Lia and Tom Gauld who will also give a talk. Woo.

Poro (Reindeer)

This sculpture was created using materials gathered from around Finland, including moss, lichen, feathers, grasses, birch bark and leaves. It is based on the Sami symbol for reindeer where the body is a rectangle and the legs and antlers are depicted by single lines.

The private view for the Society of Wildlife artists annual exhibition at The Mall Galleries was on tues and included two of my pieces from Finland. The show was opened by Chris Packham of Really Wild Show fame. (I met him at the age of 8 as he was my childhood hero) ((I also delivered his mail for a few weeks when I temp-ed as a postman but didn't want to sound like a stalker and kept that info to myself!)) So the afternoon went well and big thanks to the SWLA whose bursary support made the Finland trip possible.

I'm Back!

I'm back from Finland and things have been pretty hectic. A couple of long days and an all nighter ensured that 2 collage pieces and a sculpture (Images coming soon) were finished in time to be delivered to the Mall Gallery for the Society of Wildlife Artist's annual show. Their kind support made the trip possible and it was a fantastic trip. Picturesque pine filled, lake covered, birch sprinkled, reindeer inhabited gorgeous. Northern Lapland was the highlight with the art and culture of the indigenous Sami providing tons of inspiration for new work. Check out the photos and watch this space!

So the MA Illustration show is now up as is the shop (selling prints, badges, cards, zines and other cool handcrafted merch). Private view is tonight then I'm off to Finland to make work for the SWLA show. More pics and news coming soon (I may take a while to reply to emails whilst in Moominland).
